Dofasco Steel Plant Micropiles

In 2018, InGeo Design was engaged by Soletanche Bachy Canada to support the expansion and modernization of ArcelorMittal Dofasco, Canada’s leading steel producer. This high-value project, with an estimated cost of $50 million, was aimed at upgrading the plant’s infrastructure to enhance product capability and meet rigorous requirements for automotive and other demanding submissions.

Key Challenges

• Designing micropile foundations capable of supporting heavy industrial loads under strict geotechnical specifications
• Verifying rock adhesion assumptions
• Producing clear, precise construction drawings and schedules for numerous micropile locations within a complex industrial environment

InGeo’s Role & Scope

• Micropile design, including:

1. Detailed layout showing micropile locations relative to gridlines
2. Section details and comprehensive micropile schedules for construction use

• Performance testing, conducting adhesion tests at 200% of design loads to validate rock adhesion assumptions per project specifications

Our design and testing services gave Soletanche Bachy and ArcelorMittal Dofasco the confidence that foundation performance would meet or exceed demanding industrial standards. The high level of precision in design, combined with validation testing and clear documentation, helped keep this significant industrial upgrade on track.
