InGeo Design was engaged to provide excavation shoring design and monitoring services for the West Portal of the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, Toronto’s 19-kilometre transit corridor that connects the city from east to west. The West Portal serves as a critical transition zone where the LRT moves from a tunneled underground alignment to above ground service.
Working alongside Soletanche Bachy Canada as the shoring contractor, InGeo was responsible for delivering excavation support within a tight urban corridor.
Key Challenges
- Ensuring design takes into account seamless transition between other activities on site and other phases
- Meeting fast-paced construction timelines with minimal disruption
InGeo’s Role & Scope
- Design of a soldier pile and lagging system with a single level of tiebacks
- Detailed tieback stressing and on-site field reviews to validate design performance
- Deployment of monitoring instrumentation to ensure excavation safety and accuracy:
- Inclinometer Monitoring
- Pile Target Monitoring using a total station
Through technical clarity, rapid turnaround, and deep infrastructure experience, InGeo Design played a key role in supporting the successful excavation of the West Portal.
